Preview – IPF Masters Powerlifting Worlds

IPF Masters World Powerlifting Championships

The IPF Masters Powerlifting World Championships begins tomorrow in Orlando, FL (September 24-September 29, 2013). A total of 216 lifters were listed in the 21 day nominations. Twenty-six countries will be represented with Team USA dominating in number with 52 lifters (24%). Meet director Robert Keller has the most proven crew of workers and spotters in the world.

Let me throw out a comment out so that everyone is on the same page:  The title “Masters” is NOT code for old!  You will not find a group of competitors that are healthier, energetic, entertaining, and possess a genuine love for powerlifting than the group assembling in Orlando this week. The average age of the competitors is 54 years young. Translation…they are “Masters” at having fun! (Some of the younger lifters should take note).

Sioux-z Hartwig-Gary

I am excited about the entire week; I have a few classes that I have circled and will be eager to watch. Here is my personal list of “Do Not Miss” moments:

  • Watching three of the most influential women in the history of powerlifting: Ann Leverett, Sue Elwyn & Regina Hackney.
  • The Elite: Sioux-Z Hartwig-Gary, Jennifer Thompson & Jennifer Rey Gaudreau.
  • All of the Special Olympics Lifters!
  • The battle in the 74kg M1 Class between Nobuyuki Hamada (JAP), Tom Kean (CAN) & Darren Matsumoto (USA). The 120+kg class looks interesting, too!
  • Watching three of the guys I have always looked up to: Eric Kupperstein, Greg Page & David Ricks.

David Ricks
