Meet Directors: Roy Apostle & Mike Zawilinski

Article by: Michelle Ryan (NU’s Social Chair)

This past Sunday, powerlifters from Boston, MA area schools gathered at Northeastern University to test their strength and skill in the 2013 Northeastern University Raw Collegiate Cup.

The meet was held at the Cabot Center, and it was co-hosted by the Northeastern University Men’s and Women’s Powerlifting teams. A constant flow of energy and excitement was in the air as lifters from Boston College, Boston University, University of Connecticut, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, competed against the most competitive Northeastern University Powerlifting Team members.

Many of these competitors spent many months preparing mentally and physically for the chance to win the Raw Cup for their school.

USAPL Georgia & Southern States BP and Powerlifting Championships

November 9, 2013 – Norcross, GA
Meet Director: Josh Rohr

Hosted at Meadowcreek High School, this meet was very competitive and had a large amount of spectators.

James Vang

Outstanding Raw Lifter, James Vang (UGA).

Keeping the meet to one day required capping the entries to 150 lifters. Meet director Josh Rohr quickly filled up a great roster of Georgia powerlifters. His problem was keeping up with an alternate list of 70+ lifters. This level of interest really opened up a supply and demand question about future meets in Georgia.

This is promising news for growth potential in the state of Georgia Powerlifting (north and south).

From Josh Rohr when asked about recent growth in Georgia, “In 2010, we had about 50 lifters, in 2011 about 75, in 2012 about 90, and this year we cut it off at 150 [and had another 78 on a waiting list]. The final number was 139 because a few people didn’t show and/or backed out the week of the meet.”

Josh will be hosting another meet on December 7th in Phenix City, AL/Columbus, GA and it is filling up fast. 2014 upcoming Georgia Powerlifting meets can be found here

“Overall, I was very happy with the event. The quality and depth of lifting was incredible. There were some weight classes that were 10 or 11 people deep. I have never seen anything like that at a state meet, especially in Georgia,” says meet director Josh Rohr.
